Behaviors of Novice and Expert Designers in the Design Process: From Discovery to Design

His-Jen Chen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial Design, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan. He was a product designer in the German company Papenfuss Atelier, and received his PhD (art and design) from the Bauhaus University Weimar, Germany. The courses he offeres at NCKU include basic design, history of design, graduation projects, and interdisciplinary design think workshops. His original research focus included cross-cultural design, human-computer interaction, and Kansei engineering. In addition, he further observed various and essential issues about design learning in the differing teaching sites. Therefore, his research concentrations now are design thinking, design education, and design process.
Yan-Ting Chen

Yan-Ting Chen was a master’s student in the Department of Industrial Design at NCKU and an exchange student in the ArtCenter College of Design, USA. During her master’s degree, she was interested in the design process and the development of design methods. She is now a freelancer for UI/UX design.
Chia-Han Yang

Chia-Han Yang is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Creative Industries Design at NCKU in Taiwan. He holds a PhD degree and a master’s degree, both in management of technology, from National Chiao Tung University. He also received a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from National Taiwan University and a bachelor’s degree in power mechanical engineering from National Tsing Hua University. His research interests include service design, industry analysis, innovation management, and intellectual property right. His work has been published in Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Information and Management, European Journal of Information Systems, Sustainability, International Journal of Innovation Management, and Energy Policy, among others.
