Design Strategies for Promoting Young Children’s Physical Activity: A Playscapes Perspective

Boudewijn Boon

Boudewijn Boon is a postdoctoral design researcher at Delft University of Technology. He is an active practitioner and advocate of research through design with a drive to generate actionable insights in the domains of health and sustainability. His PhD research focused on stimulating young children’s physical activity and play in hospital environments. As a member of the Food and Eating Design Lab, Boudewijn is currently exploring new ways to promote healthy and sustainable eating.

Marco C. Rozendaal is assistant professor of Interaction Design at Delft University of Technology. He has a background in media technology and the arts. In his work, he explores new interaction design paradigms engendered by emerging technologies to understand their social opportunities and ethical implications. At this moment he is investigating artificial intelligence as a design material within the healthcare context.

Marry M. van den Heuvel-Eibrink

Marry M. van den Heuvel-Eibrink, MD, PhD, is professor of Translational Pediatric Oncology at the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology in Utrecht, the Netherlands. She works as a pediatric oncologist and as principal investigator in the Princess Máxima Center. In her research and consultancy, she focuses on renal tumors and the (genetic) variation of early and late toxicity of childhood cancer. She has specific expertise in long term outcomes of children that are born from mothers with cancer in pregnancy.

He is the department head of the Center for Child Development, Exercise and Physical Literacy at the Children’s Hospital of the University Medical Center Utrecht. In his research he focuses on improving physical activity and health in childhood chronic conditions.

Martine van Grotel is Consultant Pediatric Oncologist at the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology in Utrecht. She is dedicated to clinical care in children with solid tumors, and is involved in projects about radiotherapy in renal tumors and projects regarding ototoxicity in children with cancer. She has specific expertise in long term outcomes of children that are born from mothers with cancer in pregnancy.

Pieter Jan Stappers

Pieter Jan Stappers is chair of Design Techniques at Delft University of Technology. His research and teaching focus on the connections between research and design, such as techniques for user participation (contextmapping), and the role of doing design as a part of doing research (research through design). Key terms include perception, creativity, visualization, empathy, systems thinking, and prototyping. His organizational responsibilities have included directing the MSc programme Design for Interaction, and currently director of Graduate School and Research of the Faculty.
