Turkka Kalervo Keinonen

Turkka Keinonen, Doctor of Arts, works as a visiting associate professor at National University of Singapore, School of Design and Environment (2007-08), and as a professor and head of the Design Connections Doctoral School at the University of Art and Design Helsinki (TaiK). His research interests lie in human-centered industrial design and product concept creation. In his doctoral dissertation, One-Dimensional Usability (1998), Keinonen studied the influence of usability on consumers’ product preference. From 1998 to 2001, he worked as a principal scientist in the usability group at Nokia Research Center. From 2001 to 2006, Keinonen worked as a professor and vice dean in the School of Design in TaiK. He was nominated Finland’s designer of the year in 2000 for his merits in human-centered design. Keinonen has written or co-edited among others One-dimensional usability (1998), Mobile Usability (2003), and Product Concept Design (2006).

Industrial designer Vesa Jääskö runs Vesavisio, a design consultancy. His company provides product and service design, specializing in concept design during the early phases of development. Jääskö collaborates with Finnish industry and with national technology and business development agencies. Vesa Jääskö has previously worked as a professor at the University of Lapland and as a researcher at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, where he continues to teach and lecture in the fields of user-centered design and concept creation.
Tuuli Mattelmäki
Design Connections Doctoral School, University of Art and Design Helsinki
Tuuli Mattelmäki coordinates the Design Connections Doctoral School at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, Finland. Mattelmäki received her Doctor of Arts in design in 2006. Her doctoral dissertation titled Design Probes examines the innovative user-centered design approach, probes. She has worked in several projects developing tools and processes for user-centered concept design. As an industrial designer, she has applied her skills for enhancing exploratory design approaches that address human experiences and everyday practices. Her research and teaching has inspired industry and design students to widely apply probes. Her publications include several articles about probes, empathic design, and design for user experience.
