A Competence Model for Design Managers: A Case Study of Middle Managers in Korea

Hyo-Jin Kang is a PhD candidate in the department of Industrial Design at KAIST. She received a BS degree in industrial design at the same school, and experienced several design projects at BETC Design in Paris. Kang also gained an MBA with double diploma from the Sorbonne (Paris 1) and Dauphine (Paris 9) universities while receiving a scholarship from the Renault Foundation in France. Subsequently, she worked at Renault Samsung Motors (Seoul) for more than four years as an assistant brand manager in Marketing and a customer research manager in Product Planning. Since joining the Design Management Lab at KAIST, Kang has presented various pieces of research domestically and internationally at major design management conferences, and has researched the competence development of middle-level design managers for her doctoral study.
Kyung-won Chung

Dr. Kyung-won Chung has been a professor of Industrial Design at KAIST since 1984. Chung received his doctorate from Manchester Metropolitan University, a master’s degree in industrial design from Syracuse University, and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in industrial design from Seoul National University. As a design management expert, Chung has provided various organizations in the public and private sectors with professional services. He served in the Seoul Metropolitan Government as chief design officer (a post equivalent to deputy mayor) for two years from 2009 and at the Korea Institute of Design Promotion as president and CEO (2000–2003) while on leave from KAIST. He also served at Hyundai Card as an outside executive director (2007–2009), at Samsung Electronics as a global design advisor (2004–2008), at Icsid as an executive board member (1995–1999), and at other organizations on a part-time basis. He was awarded a Silver Tower Industrial Order (2003) and a Presidential Prize (1999) by the Korean government.
Ki Young Nam

Dr. Ki-Young Nam is an associate professor of Industrial Design at KAIST. He received BA (Hons.) and MA degrees in Industrial Design from Central St. Martins College of Art and Design, University of the Arts London. Subsequently, he obtained a PhD in design management from Manchester Metropolitan University. Nam worked as Faculty Research Facilitator at the University of Lincoln, UK, before joining KAIST where he established his research lab, Design IS. He publishes his research internationally in major design and design management journals and conferences, for which he also regularly reviews papers. Nam carries out industry projects for major companies such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and Coway, and advises the government in various capacities. He is currently on the editorial board of the Journal of Design Management.
